Rules and regulations are the foundation of a well-governed society. Without them, the society descends to anarchy and loses its credibility. That is not something that the ruler of Dubai wants. Dubai has come a long way from being a small fishing village to one of the most renowned metropolises in the world. Partially, it is thanks to the strict regulations that boost and maintain the safety and well-being of the citizens. As for the tourists, there are certain things that you are not allowed to do in Dubai. It would be best to know what you can and can’t do before traveling there. Well, this article is the key to uncovering this mystery. To find out more, continue reading.

What are the 10 rules in Dubai

Let’s begin with the basic rules of thumb. So, if you ask anyone who has been to Dubai to give you advice on what to do and not to do there, they will give 10 essential rules that will help you stay out of trouble during your stay. Here’s the list:

    1. Wear appropriate clothes.
    2. Follow the regulations in Ramadan (Avoid eating and drinking in public during this month).
    3. Avoid playing loud music in public.
    4. Never swear or use disrespectful language.
    5. Do not drink in public places.
    6. Wear a head covering and modest clothing upon entering religious places like mosques.
    7. Cross-dressing is not acceptable.
    8. Avoid making rude hand gestures while driving.
    9. Avoid showing public displays of affection.
    10. Don’t smoke in public unless in a designated smoking area.

What is not allowed in Dubai

The official religion of Dubai is Islam. Although Dubai is extremely hospitable toward tourists, they have zero tolerance when someone insults or disrespects Islam. It is best to keep your opinions to yourself and not express them out loud because blasphemy can bring you serious punishment.

As mentioned before, you cannot swear or use disrespectful language in public. You might mean no harm by using swear words in your conversations, like using the f-word mid-sentence. However, cursing and using foul language are considered an offense in Dubai, and many tourists have gotten themselves in trouble by making vulgar comments in public.

What are the strict rules in Dubai

Dubai’s laws and regulations are based on Islamic laws. In Islam, homosexuality is prohibited. Consequently, homosexuality is illegal in the UAE. It will not be a problem if you keep your relationship discreet. Avoid PDAs and cross-dressing. There should not be a problem if you keep your private relationships to yourself.

What is illegal in Dubai for tourists

Let’s take a look at things that are illegal to do for tourists in Dubai:

    • Carrying medications, especially those containing the painkiller codeine, is prohibited without a prescription. The government has a zero-tolerance policy towards the people in possession of drugs and unprescribed medicines. Even if you do have prescriptions, there is a limitation to the number of prescription medicines you can carry with you. Make sure to do your research before traveling.
    • Taking photos of other people without their permission is illegal. If you wish to take photos of other people, you have to get their permission first. The government is strictly severe to those who take pictures of local women without obtaining consent.
    • Sexual harassment is another illegal action in Dubai.
    • You can never drink alcohol or be drunk while driving. If you do, serious punishments await you.

    Dubai rules for female tourists

For female visitors, the primary regulation to abide by is to dress conservatively. Of course, you are not expected to dress in full coverage during your whole trip. However, you are expected to dress modestly outside out of respect. It’s better to check the dress code before visiting malls, attractions, etc. Keep in mind that you are expected to wear a head covering upon entering religious places like mosques.

    Rules in Dubai for foreigners

If you are scared of all the rules and regulations mentioned so far, you don’t need to worry. As long as you are respectful toward the locals, their religion, and customs, you won’t have any problems. In fact, in Dubai, being respectful brings a smile to people’s faces, making them greet you with the warmest hospitality. So, you don’t need to be worried to get into trouble. As long as you behave respectfully and humbly, everything will be fine.

    Rules in Dubai for couples

Avoiding PDAs is a must in Dubai. Hand-holding might be ok in more intimate environments. However, avoid hugging, kissing, and other forms of physical affection while you are in public. Wait until you’re back at your hotel rooms, and then you’re free! You should also know that unmarried couples are not allowed to stay in the same hotel room by law. However, there are some hotels that will not ask questions. Better check the hotel policy before booking your accommodations.

    Weird laws in Dubai

Do you want to know something weird? You cannot shake hands or greet anyone using your left hand! In Muslim culture, the left hand is usually used for body hygiene. Consequently, it might be considered unclean. That’s why you can never use your left hand to greet people because it will be considered rude and insensetive.
